Program Theory
Equestrian assisted therapy is a goal-directed or solution focused
intervention and can be an integral part of a narrative perspective to a therapeutic intervention process. Equestrian
assisted therapy is designed to promote improvements in physical, social, emotional, and cognitive behaviors, in a variety
of settings. This intervention process is a tool to enhance personal awareness, change maladaptive conduct, assist in the
development of positive regard for self and others; in essence, this process is designed to enhance the participant's character
and personal development. The process of equestrian assisted therapy identifies the personal synergy that evolves in the individual,
which may be a key factor in the character and personal development of each participant. An intervention of
this nature provides insight for the participant and the ability to determine the significance of evaluating their reaction
to life's phenomenons. The premise of equestrian assisted therapy is to encourage each participant to assess themselves and
act according to their personal strengths; and recognize how these strengths impact themselves and others in their social
construct.
